* The Northland has a rich history of architecture plus many new and innovative buildings.
One Duluth architectural firm takes credit for being a part of both old and new.
“I think SJA has been responsible for a lot of Duluth’s major public building landscape over the last 30 years.”
SJA Architects opened its doors in Duluth in 1976.
The company has expanded through the years from five employees to now more than 30 people.
“It’s pretty thrilling to see a building getting built, to see reality take shape other than drawings.”
SJA has designed several buildings on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus along with the Zeitgeist Arts Center, and the new hockey arena under construction at the DECC.
But SJA also takes on smaller projects too.
“I’m currently working on a 50 thousand dollar addition to someones house and we also do a lot of work for the public housing authorities around northern Minnesota.”
While working on projects, SJA makes it a priority to work with other area businesses whenever possible.
“We work with three or four of the local civil engineering firms, there’s a couple structural engineers, mechanical, electrical engineering firms that we consult with on a regular basis.”
Right now SJA is in survival mode as they are feeling some of the effects of the recession but they have high hopes for the future.
“Hopefully when the economy rebounds we’re poised with our firm to expand and grow, that’s our hope.”
SJA also has offices in St. Paul and St. Cloud.
